Last weekend my family was due for a getaway. I have made a concerted effort to start supporting local businesses this past year. I try to eat local, shop local, and stay local, because each dollar I spend in my state, returns 3x more to my local economy than when spent at chains. That is something that benefits all of us in our communities, so I encourage you to become a hipster and get on the bandwagon.
Last weekend my family needed a vacation. I have been elbow deep in diapers, while simultaneously not getting fired from my job, and writing in my spare time. I basically hide in my closet at 3am, writing blogs and eating spoonfuls of Nutella. I was due for a break.
If you are one of our Michigan or Indiana readers, you have to take your next family getaway in Traverse City. It is my favorite Lake Michigan spot. The food is excellent, and the friendly small town vibes make you feel like all is not lost in our world.
We chose Cherry Tree Inn & Suites for multiple reasons. 1) They are the top-rated beach front hotel in Traverse City, and receive more reviews than any other hotel in the area. If you have a minute, check out a few of their +2700 reviews on Tripadvisor.com.
We had an opportunity to spend 3 nights. The hotel is very comfortable with lots of amenities. Friendly staff, including a personal note from housekeeping each day. There is a nice blend of romance, yet very family friendly. Rooms are very clean, with very comfortable beds and bedding. The complementary breakfast was excellent and the selection varied day to day. Can’t wait to return, next time with the kids.

2) They care about their customers. They have cookies at the front door along with an umbrella to help you stay dry if it rains. They clear off your car if it snows. There are family friendly hotels and then there are family hotels. Cherry Tree treats you like family.
3) Location. It is perfectly located on the Grand Traverse Bay, and in an optimal position for night life and great food. I may have ate my weight in delicacies, but I was supporting local business, so, it’s cool.
From my own experience, the room was perfect. The pool is open 24 hours if you have children who think they are Michael Phelps. The complimentary breakfast was delicious, and the hotel staff goes above and beyond.
My husband sat on the couch with me this morning drinking his morning cup of coffee, and was still smiling about our stay last weekend. We will absolutely be back, and I am hoping that I may bump into you while we are there.
